Control. It’s what they want, it’s what they always want. A way of getting you to do exactly what they want you to do. Well not you specifically, that’s not how the species works. If they can’t get you, there are a thousand other suckers that will do what they’re told and thank us for the privilege. That’s what we’ve reduced the human population to; statistics. Any marketer worth their salt knows that their value is based on conversion rate; “what percentage of people can I get to do x?” They construct these funnels of content, aimed at convincing you to do something you weren’t planning on doing, be it buy a new electric toothbrush, try out a new food delivery app, or vote for something that will ultimately doom you. How would you convince someone to do something that they really shouldn’t be doing? For some that’s the hook, they want to be the bad boy, they want to play devil’s advocate. They’ve convinced themselves that “counter-culture” is an important enough part of their identity that they’ll do anything to convince themselves that they are indeed, “counter” to culture.  Others are more afraid of being wrong than anything else. Can you imagine the shame? The sheer force of cringe believing something false to be true? The behind-the-back laughter of your peers? You, for all your talent, skill, and intelligence have become a laughing stock because you believed the wrong thing. And whilst you disagree with the principle of the thing, you can’t argue with facts...right? My favourite type of person, the ones easiest to control are the ones that forge their own identity. The “free thinkers,” the ones that “do their own research,” the ones that will break and shatter their own beliefs if enough leverage is applied. #modernculture #power #thinking
