It’s the edits that hurt the verse
Leaving lyrics taught and terse
For the rhythm to flow and surge
You need, ironically, to not think about every verb
Instead just let it pour out of you
And come back later to sort
To choose to continue or abort
Not everything written is worth pursuing
Hell, most of it’s not worth perusing
But eventually (and with enough time)
You’ll uncover something that makes you want to rhyme
To explore and express, to implore to excess
Maybe it’s just a single line
And if it’s a single idea? Fine
At least you made something worth keeping
Isn’t that the creativity we’re seeking?
To create something that feels worthwhile
That makes you or others cry or smile
Or laugh or shout, get angry about
A para-social interaction
Dialogue disguised as an entertaining distraction
I mean, that’s what I’m trying to do
If you asked me, “who are you?”
I’d have to point to pieces like this
And say, “read it”
“I don’t know what it means”
“If it makes you feel, I’ve achieved my dreams”
But if you don’t, that’s perfectly alright
I made it for me
